The music of the Cuban composer and musician Rafael Hernandez is not widely known outside of Cuba. Perhaps that is partly because his name was changed at some point to Paquito D'Riveira, but also because he developed his own unique fusion of Afrocuban (African) rhythms, folkloric Cuban son (style), European classical music, and jazz. Born in the city of Havana on October 17th 1894 Guitarras de Amor en La Habana , Hernandez became very adept with the guitar. Hernandez studied at the Conservatory of Havana from 1910-1914. In 1915 he became a member of the "Banda Estrellas Orientales". In 1918 Hernandez began to write his own music and it is thought that during this period he composed many rumba (Cuban dance form) songs under the name Ruy Blas de la Portilla. Between 1919 and 1922 Hernandez composed much music for the theatre, including "Bilongo" (1920) and "El Cocuy" (1921). Hernandez also led his own dance orchestra in the 1920s, called the "Orquesta Sinfonica Habanera" which he expanded in 1922 to include more European instruments. It was during this time that Hernandez wrote some of his most important works including "Afrosalsa", one of his most famous compositions. He also composed two operas during this period "La Escuela del Amor" (1921) and "La Rosa de America" (1926). Sometime between 1929 and 1931 Hernandez changed his name to Paquito D'Rivera, with many speculating that it was because he was involved in an affair with a woman named Rivero. He was also personally involved in a scandal with the Cuban government during this time. One of his last works between 1935 and 1940 (and perhaps the only one that was not published) is "Cantos de la Habanera" which was commissioned by Eduardo Chibás, director of the National School of Music, to commemorate the 50th year of his tenure at that position. There is no information regarding if or when this work was performed. After this work it seems that Paquito D'Rivera never composed again. His final work "El Goce" has been attributed to Hernandez himself stating in a letter he wrote on March 10, 1940: "I have written a book about love with poetry and music... The book is called "El Goce" (The Joy)". There's no official information about Hernandez's death. He is believed to have died sometime in 1940, but the exact date has not been confirmed.
A list of approximately 50 works by Paquito D'Rivera which can be found in the Music Library of the International Institute of Social History located in Amsterdam. The archive also includes an extensive collection of pictures, letters, and other material related to his life and activities.
